The Havana Grey bandwagon continues: new Group winner in the Group 3 Cornwallis Stakes
THE Whitsbury Stud leading first-season sire Havana Grey achieved a one-two in the Cornwallis Stakes (G2), the stud’s homebred Rumstar, trained by Jonathan Portman and the owned by Mr Vincent Ward, leading home Maylandsea, trained by Michael Bell for Middleham Park Racing.
He is a third Group 3 winner for the sire. Maylandsea has held form well having finished second in the Queen Mary Stakes (G2).
Portman has won the race twice before with Royal Razalma (2014) and Mrs Danvers (2016).
“I have only had two runners in this before and they both won. He is a smashing little horse, very straightforward, I am very lucky to have him,” said Portman. “You need to stay here and did not see an issue dropping back to 5f. He has kept his form well and I have not been too hard on him since Kempton when he was fourth from a terrible draw.
“He is only little and so tough.”
He will be put away now and “have a rest” according to Portman.
He is out of the fast and talented Sakhee’s Secret mare Stellarta and is a grand-son of Torgau (Zieten), a Group 2 winner at two and Group 1 placed at three.
